Does My Heater Have a Problem?

woman-on-laptopWaking up to a chilly home is just a part of the time of year that we are in. This isn’t an issue when you have a reliable heater in your home that can keep you cozy. However, if your system isn’t working quite right, you will find yourself struggling to get your home warm throughout the day, not just in the morning.

When your heat pump or furnace is acting up, you may need to reach out to us for heating repair in Katy, TX. If you aren’t sure how to tell that you need to schedule repairs for your heating system, we are happy to help. Stay alert to these potential warning signs so you know when to reach out to us.

How To Tell Your Heater Needs a Repair

You don’t ever want to delay addressing a repair need unnecessarily. That is why your best bet is to identify when you might need a repair and reach out for professional service as soon as you can. These warning signs are great to know as they are big indicators of trouble in your heater:

  • Concerning sounds: Does something about your heater sound off? If so, don’t ignore it! Sounds that don’t belong are often the first signs we notice of heating system trouble. Noises such as rattling, cleaning,  screeching, hissing, baning, and others are all indicators of trouble within your furnace or heat pump.
  • Poor heating power: How is your home’s level of warmth these days? Does it feel like, no matter how long you run your heater it just doesn’t warm things up like it used to? You aren’t imagining this. Chances are that something within the system needs to be repaired to restore the heating process.
  • Low airflow: Perhaps you know that your heater’s internal components are in peak shape but you notice that the airflow into the house isn’t up to par. This is just as harmful to your system and your comfort. Whether it is a clogged filter, a bad blower fan, or something else, make sure to get a pro to address airflow problems ASAP.
  • High energy bills: It is true that your energy bills will fluctuate a bit based on your use of your HVAC system. These changes should be relatively small though. They most certainly shouldn’t reflect huge spikes in the use of energy or natural gas. If you are noticing that your energy bills are showing huge spikes rather than small changes, it is an indicator that something is up with your heater.
  • Worrying smells: Last but not least, remember that the nose knows! It is natural instinct for us to pause when we smell something that doesn’t seem right–this helps keep us alive. If you turn on your heater and notice acrid smells or the smell of gas, turn off your system immediately and contact a professional technician for help. Aside from the scent of a bit of burning dust (easily avoidable with a tune-up by the way), you shouldn’t really smell anything when your heater runs.
