Should Your Heat Pump be Maintained Twice a Year?

As we’ve discussed here, and you’ve probably read or heard elsewhere too, regular preventive maintenance is essential to ensuring that your climate control systems are in good working order. However, not all HVAC systems have the same maintenance requirements.

For example, if you’ve used a heat pump to stay cool this summer, you might think that you don’t need to schedule maintenance for it again until next spring. However, heat pump systems need maintenance more often than other standard heating and cooling systems. Keep reading to learn more about why that is.

Preventive Care

The purpose of preventive maintenance is to stay on top of any potential problems before they have the opportunity to develop far enough to severely damage your system. Most heat pump issues don’t give off any easily identifiable symptoms until they’re pretty far advanced.

By the time the average homeowner realizes they have a problem with their system and calls for repairs, it can be too late to prevent the majority of the damage. However, if you schedule preventive maintenance, you’ll give our HVAC technicians the chance to locate and solve issues early enough to prevent the worst of the damage. This could equate to many thousands of dollars saved in repair costs.

Why Bi-Annually?

Normally, an air conditioning unit or a heater would only need maintenance once a year. This is usually conducted the season before the system will be used the most often to ensure that it’s in top operating condition. However, heat pumps are utilized as both heating and air conditioning units all in one system, and therefore require maintenance twice as often.

Heat pumps are placed under much more stress and wear and tear than other systems, so it’s only natural that they need much more care. Be sure to schedule your heat pump maintenance twice a year—ideally once in the spring and once in fall.
