Smell Gas? Get Your Furnace Fixed Fast!

woman looking very concerned with hand over mouthFurnaces are well known for being reliable, effective, and energy-efficient heating systems for homes all over the nation. Those of us in Texas certainly make the most of using our furnaces when winter hits and everyone holes up indoors. We may not get snowbanks or ice, but we do prefer our warmer temperatures!

Turning on the heat shouldn’t be a decision you make that puts you and your home in danger. Unfortunately, with long-term use, your furnace will accrue repair needs and once such needed fix is the type that can present a danger to the safety and well-being of everyone in the home. We want you to know about this repair need, and how to spot it, so you can get it fixed fast and enjoy your home comfort once again.

A Vital Repair: Fixing Your Heat Exchanger

The repair need in question is that of getting your heat exchanger fixed. We realize that many people may not know what could go wrong with their heat exchanger or are unsure what this part of your furnace even is—so we will answer some of the most common questions we get about it.

What is a Heat Exchanger

Your heat exchanger is essentially responsible for creating the warm air that is blown into your home. When your furnace turns on and ignites, the combustible gases that are created are sent into the heat exchanger. This metal structure in your furnace holds the combustible gas and warms up, thereby warming the air around it which is blown into the home.

What Goes Wrong With it?

Your heat exchanger can end up with weaknesses that develop into cracks. This is obviously a problem for a couple different reasons. The first reason is that it can impact your heat. If the combustible gas leaks out, your heat exchanger won’t produce any heat leaving you chilled. However, the bigger problem is this: there is a variety of combustible gases that are leaking into your home from that crack. Having a cracked heat exchanger isn’t just inconvenient, it’s dangerous and it is an issue that needs to be fixed quickly with professional furnace repair in Cypress, TX.

What Signs Should I Look For?

Of course if you have a cracked heat exchanger and don’t know what to look for the issue won’t be resolved. Signs that your heat exchanger has a problem include:

  • A Rattling Noise: Heat causes the metal of your heat exchanger to expand which will create a rattling noise in your furnace.
  • No Heat: Because gas is leaking out and escaping, your heat exchanger won’t be able to produce heat.
  • Bad Smells: The gas in your furnace can create a smell of gas or sulfur and rotten eggs.
  • Signs of Carbon Monoxide Sickness: Headaches, dizziness, nausea and other symptoms are indicators of the presence of carbon monoxide which is caused by a gas leak.
