Is Your Attic Properly Insulated?

For most Texans, when you think of insulation, you think of staying warm during the winter. And since winter weather is so short here, it’s easy to see why you might not understand the importance of good attic insulation. Just as insulation keeps heat in your home during the winter, it also keeps heat out of your home during the summer. This in turn reduces your air conditioner’s workload and helps your home cool efficiently.

The Benefits of Good Attic Insulation

According to Energy.gov, your heating and cooling costs account for close to half of all your energy used in your home. So if you are losing cold air, you are wasting energy and money. Adding the right type and the right amount of insulation, however, can help reduce your energy costs by lowering the amount of energy your air conditioner must expel to cool your hoe down to a comfortable level.

How Does Insulation Help in the Summer?

Air naturally moves from a warm area to a cold one. During the summer, the warm air outside is trying to make its way into the cooler air within your home. Rooms such as attics, basements, and garages are all prime locations for this air exchange to occur, and then from there the warm air seeps into the rest of your home. What insulation does is it limits air movement within your home, preventing the warm air from entering and allowing your air conditioner to do its job effectively.

Blown-In Insulation

There are a few different types of insulation for attics, including flexible fiber batts and rolls, foam insulation, and blown-in loose fill. Blown-in insulation is a loose fill made from fibers or fiber pellets, which can be added to any other type of insulation. This is an excellent option for the unfinished walls and flooring of an attic, to fill in any spaces and gaps.
