These Sounds Mean You Need AC Repairs

Texas has begun to heat up and to bring out those lovely springtime rainstorms. This, of course, means spending a bit more time indoors trying to keep comfortable and dry. If your air conditioning system is having trouble though this goal will be harder than you might expect.

AC Installation Why Size Matters

While it may not be the height of summer yet, it doesn’t mean you won’t be using your AC. And even some use creates wear and tear that can surface a potential repair need. If you notice that your AC system is showing signs of a problem, your best option is to get things fixed up ASAP, before you lose your ability to cool your home in the middle of a heatwave.

Listen Up!

One of the best ways to pinpoint if and when your air conditioner is having a problem is to know what the sounds are that indicate an issue. Keep your ears alert for any of the following noises as they are warnings you should reach out for repairs in the near future.

  1. Hissing: Hissing can have two sources. The first may indicate a problem with an air leakage in your ductwork; the other source may be a leak in your refrigerant line. Both potential causes are going to drive your comfort down and raise your utility bills so it is best not to ignore them.
  2. Buzzing: Buzzing is another noise that may have more than one cause. This sound may find its source in loose parts, debris around your indoor or outdoor units, an unbalanced fan blade, dirty AC parts, and more. Buzzing may not always indicate an urgent problem but it should be a sound that tells you it is time to call in a professional soon.
  3. Clicking: When you turn on your thermostat, you may hear some clicking noises pretty regularly. While this noise may be a normal part of the start-up or shut down of your system, constant or ongoing clicking is not.  Extended clicking noises may be caused by a failing thermostat or another failing part within your AC.
  4. Squealing, Squeaking, or Rattling: These are all sounds that may indicate problems in your air conditioners fan motors, the blower wheel, or the housing. In some systems, a few brief moments of squealing or rattling may be normal, but if you’re noticing these sounds are sticking around and becoming louder or more prominent, it isn’t something to ignore.
