Indoor Air Quality
- Maintenance Program
The standard way that people think of forced-air heaters and air conditioners is as systems that hook up to a large network of ducts. Blower fans send the conditioned air into the ventilation system, and it then spreads out to the vents into the rooms. Although this is an effective method of distributing comfort, it isn’t the only way to handle central heating and cooling. Ductless systems, also known as ductless mini splits, allow for quality comfort without a number of the drawbacks of ductwork.

How Ductless Mini Splits Work
The basics of a ductless cooling and heating system are similar to those of a standard split unit heat pump: indoor and outdoor cabinets circulate refrigerant to move heat from one place to another. In heating mode, the indoor unit releases heat, and in cooling mode, the indoor unit absorbs it.
The difference with a ductless mini split system is in the "mini" part of name. Instead of using a single indoor unit that connects to ducts, a ductless system has multiple indoor air handlers. These smaller units are mounted on the walls of rooms, and each one connects to the outside unit through refrigerant and power lines that run through the back of the wall. The air handlers send air directly into the living spaces without requiring ductwork to transport it.
Some Benefits of Installing Ductless Cooling and Heating
A ductless mini split isn’t ideal for all homes. But for the homes they’re suited for, they offer some great advantages:
- Increased energy efficiency: Because ductless mini splits have smaller mechanical components than standard split systems, they use less power. Another reason for their superior energy efficiency is the absence of ducts means the air doesn’t lose or gain heat on the way to a room.
- Zone control: Each of the air handlers in a ductless mini split can be operated separately from the others. You only need to cool/heat the rooms that need it, and people can adjust the temperature in whatever room they’re in.
- Improved air quality: Because ducts can gather large amounts of dust and debris that will then get blown out into the living spaces whenever the AC or heater comes on, they often contribute to a decline in air quality. Without ducts, this isn’t a problem.
