Don’t Believe These AC Myths! – Fresh Air Cooling and Heating

HVAC myths can cost you money and shorten the life of your system. Here are four of the most common ones, debunked.

Myth 1: Refrigerant Needs to Be Topped Off Regularly

Refrigerant does not deplete on its own. Your system is charged at installation and should last its entire lifespan. If levels are low, you have a leak that needs to be found and repaired. Any technician charging you to refill refrigerant at every maintenance visit is not being honest with you.

Myth 2: Setting the Thermostat Lower Cools Your Home Faster

Lowering the thermostat does not speed up cooling. It just makes your system run longer to reach a lower temperature, which increases energy use and wear on the system. Set it to your desired temperature and let it work.

Myth 3: You Do Not Need to Change Your Air Filter Often

A clogged filter restricts airflow, strains your system, and leaves you less comfortable. Do not wait for your annual maintenance visit. Depending on your filter type, it should be changed every one to three months.

Myth 4: Turning Your AC Off When Away Wastes Energy

Turning your AC off while away actually saves energy. Yes, it will take a little longer to cool down when you return, but that is far more efficient than running the system all day in an empty home.
